Latine Queerstories: Testimonios Orales de Migración

Latine Queerstories: Testimonios Orales de Migración, es un proyecto bilingüe profundamente arraigado en humanizar, preservar y crear espacio para las voces queer latines. Elegimos el neogolismo “latine” para subvertir el binario de género femenino/masculino e incluir a todos los que componen la diáspora latine (Cuevas & Urquijo-Ruiz 2017). Este proyecto nace de la urgencia de crear espacios para aquellos cuyas historias de identidad de género, sexual e (im)migrante han sido históricamente marginadas y silenciadas, desafiando así las narrativas dominantes y fomentando una comprensión mas inclusiva de experiencias de identidad en relación con la sexualidad y estatus migratorio latines queer.

El proyecto presenta dos colecciones, cada una de las cuales contiene sus respectivas entrevistas y descripciones en el enlace de Youtube, y sus símbolos personales de identidad compartidos por los participantes o queertifacts. Se agregaron obras creativas adicionales, como libros de (im)migrantes queer, libros queer de autores de San Anto, historias y archivos que se pueden ubicar física y digitalmente en San Antonio, TX. Discusiones dentro de las pláticas realizadas exploran las intersecciones de raza, etnia, sexualidad, idioma y nacionalidad, mostrando diversas identidades y sus conexiones. Se decidió utilizar una plática como la metodologí­a preferida, ya que nos anima a afrontar el proceso de investigación con todo el ser: el dolor, los deseos y el afecto. Aceptar la identidad, ya seas butch o femme, prieta o güera, o algo intermedio, y reconocer las experiencias queer como comunidad, animándonos a adoptar diversas formas de entender las identidades queer dentro de la diáspora latine (Calderon et al. 2012).

Este proyecto es una luz guía para las futuras generaciones de (im)migrantes/transfronterizes latines queer de San Antonio, Texas, brindando una representación precisa, fomentando la comprensión comunitaria, curando traumas pasados, abogando por mejores políticas de (im)migración, educación y creando espacios para los queer latines. Reconocemos las contribuciones de habitantes de San Antonio como Anel Flores y Virginia Grise a la literatura y las artes creativas queer latines, asi como iniciativas como, The Happy Archive, la sección de historia LGBTQ+ en la biblioteca pública de San Antonio y los archivos LGBTQ+ de la Universidad de Texas en San Antonio, pero reconocemos que se necesita más trabajo (Cuevas y Urquijo-Ruiz 2017).

Module Description-English Translation

Latine Queerstories: Oral Testimonies of Migration, is a bilingual project deeply rooted in humanizing, preserving and making space for Latine queer voices. We chose the neogolism, “Latine” to subvert the feminine/masculine gender binary and include all who make up the Latine diáspora (Cuevas & Urquijo-Ruiz 2017). This project is born from the urgency of creating spaces for those whose stories of gender, sexual and (im)migrant identity have been historically marginalized and silenced, thus challenging dominant narratives and fostering a more inclusive understanding of queer Latine sexual and (im)migrant identity experiences. 

The project features two collections, each containing their respective interviews and descriptions under the Youtube link, and their personal symbols of identity shared by participants. Additional creative works were added such as, Queer (im)migrant books, Queer Books from San Anto authors, stories, and archives that can be physically and digitally located in San Antonio, TX. Discussions within the conducted platicas explore the intersections of race, ethnicity, sexuality, language, and nationality, showcasing diverse identities and their connections. The team decided to use a platica/conversation as the preferred methodology as it encourages them to face the research process with their entire being - their grief, their wishes, and their affection. Embracing identity, whether you are butch or femme, prieta or güera, or somewhere in between—acknowledging these journeys as a community and encouraging to embrace diverse ways of understanding queerness within the Latine diáspora (Calderon et al. 2012).

This project is a guiding light for future generations of queer Latine (im)migrants and transfronterize individuals in San Antonio, Texas, by providing accurate representation, fostering community understanding, healing past traumas, advocating for improved immigration policies, education, and creating spaces for Latine queer people. We acknowledge the contributions of San Antonians like Anel Flores and Virginia Grise to queer Latine literature and creative arts, as well as initiatives such as, The Happy Archive, the LGBTQ+ history section at San Antonio's public library, and the LGBTQ+ archives at the University of Texas at San Antonio, but recognize that more work is needed (Cuevas & Urquijo-Ruiz 2017).

Metodología y Marco Teórico 

Al crear Latine Queerstories: Testimonios Orales de Migración, nuestro marco teórico y metodología se inspiraron en Cindy O. Fierros y Dolores Delgado Bernal en VAMOS A PLATICAR: The Contours of Pláticas as Chicana/Latina feminist Methodology. Fierros y Bernal nos ayudaron a centrarnos en la interconexión del método, la metodología y la epistemología y cómo las pláticas pueden ser una estrategia para recopilar datos que abarque teoría, análisis del proceso de investigación, técnicas y estrategias para recopilar datos y la naturaleza, estado y producción de conocimiento basado en visiones del mundo influenciadas por el entorno vivido (Fierros y Bernal 2016).
La metodología del proyecto incluyó de establecer roles y responsabilidades entre los miembros del equipo. Luego se organizó los documentos del proyecto, incluidos metadatos, metodología, marco teórico, descripción del proyecto, preguntas de la entrevista y un conjunto de datos, en una carpeta de Google. Antes de las entrevistas, se desarrolló una descripción del proyecto y preguntas para garantizar la comprensión y el consentimiento de los participantes. El reclutamiento de personas latines queer (im)migrantes y transfronterizes de la región Estados Unidos-México se realizó a través de Instagram, fomentando la colaboración. Se programaron y realizaron entrevistas, algunas con provisiones para refrigerios y bebidas para crear un ambiente cómodo, y se recordó a los participantes su derecho a no responder todas las preguntas. Después de la entrevista, los videos se editaron usando iMovie, con los nombres de los participantes, el título del proyecto y los créditos finales del entrevistador y editor. Los videos editados se cargaron en YouTube, se creó un playlist y se revisaron las transcripciones para la extracción de metadatos. Los metadatos se compilaron en una hoja de Google y los detalles del proyecto se agregaron al módulo del proyecto LLAPS digital utilizando Omeka. Esto incluyó enlaces incrustados a los videos de Youtube, fotografías digitalizadas de los objetos de los entrevistados usando Flickr e información adicional del proyecto, con las entrevistas categorizadas en dos colecciones. Los participantes recibieron descripciones de las entrevistas para garantizar una representación precisa de sus historias.

Además, al buscar libros, archivos y otros repositorios de artes creativas de Queer Latine, utilizamos el motor de búsqueda de Google y la minería de textos utilizando palabras como: libros Latinx Queer, autores Latinx Queer, libros LGBTQ+ San Antonio, libros Queer San Antonio, Autores queer de San Antonio y etc.

Se implementaron medidas de control de calidad para garantizar la exactitud e integridad de los datos recopilados, incluida la comparación de transcripciones con secuencias de video y la realización de revisiones de los productos finales entre sí. En general, priorizamos las consideraciones éticas, la autonomía de los participantes y la producción de contenido significativo y de alta calidad que refleje con precisión las diversas experiencias de las personas queer latinas en contextos migratorios.

Theoretical Framework & Methodology-English Translation 

In creating Latine Queerstories: Testimonios Orales de Migración, the theoretical framework and methodology were inspired by Cindy O. Fierros and Dolores Delgado Bernal in, VAMOS A PLATICAR: The Contours of Pláticas as Chicana/Latina feminist Methodology. Fierros and Bernal helped the team focus on the interconnectedness of method, methodology and epistemology and how platicas can be a strategy to collect data that encompasses, theory, analysis of the research process, techniques and strategies to collect data and the nature, status and production of knowledge based on worldviews influenced by ones lived environment (Fierros & Bernal 2016).

The team's methodology included the of establishing roles and responsibilities among team members. Then, the team organized project documents, including metadata, methodology, theoretical framework, description of the project, interview questions, and a dataset, in a Google Folder. Prior to interviews, the team developed a project description and questions to ensure participant understanding and consent. Recruitment of Latine queer (im)migrant and transfronterize individuals from the US-Mexico region was conducted through Instagram, fostering collaboration. Interviews were scheduled and conducted, some with provisions for snacks and beverages to create a comfortable environment, with participants reminded of their right not to answer all questions. Post-interview, videos were edited using iMovie, with participant names, the title of the project and end interviewer and editor credits. Edited videos were uploaded to YouTube, created a playlist and transcriptions were reviewed for metadata extraction. Metadata was compiled in a Google Sheet, and project details were added to the digital LLAPS project module using Omeka. This included embedded links to the Youtube videos, digitized pictures of interviewees' objects using Flickr, and additional project information, with interviews categorized into two collections. Participants were provided with interview descriptions to ensure accurate representation of their stories.

Also, when looking for the relative books, archives and other Queer Latine creative arts repositories, the team used the Google search engine and text mining by using words such as: Latinx Queer books, Latinx Queer authors, LGBTQ+ books San Antonio, Queer San Antonio books, Queer San Antonio authors and etc.

Furthermore, quality control measures were implemented to ensure the accuracy and integrity of the data collected, including cross-referencing transcriptions with video footage and conducting reviews of the final products with each other. Overall, we prioritized ethical considerations, participant autonomy, and the production of high-quality, meaningful content that accurately reflects the diverse experiences of Latine queer individuals in migration contexts.
